Taiwan Beauty Haul

How does, literally, a no makeup kind of girl become a makeup fiend?? Seriously, when I was 16 years old and I had to do my makeup for an event, I only used (and owned at that time) one makeup brush to do my entire face haha! Now, I have amassed brushes and sponges for my face needs. When I turned 19, it was as if a switch was turned on and I started channeling my inner Cleopatra. I got obsessed from watching YouTube makeup tutorials, experimenting how to put on makeup and learning how to use different tools to achieve my desired looks. Case in point: I did my own makeup in this photo for a magazine feature. Maybe since I love painting and drawing, it was natural for me to transition from a canvas to my face. That being said, I get giddy whenever I discover new and amazing products especially when traveling.

I visited Taiwan last April and got to finally experience shopping at Ximending and the Shilin Night Market. I checked out a few of the drug stores and beauty shops just to take a look at their wide selection of beauty products. And obviously, I couldn’t help but cop some stuff I was sure I couldn’t get back home. This time, I chose to buy some unique products (that have the cutest packaging ahh!!) Check out my haul:

TONYMOLY Magic Food Banana Hand Milk [2016 Special Gift Set]
If there’s something I love just as much as beauty products, it has to be food. Anything that smells like marshmallows, strawberries, and other delicious food is a must-buy for me. That paired with cute packaging tugs at my heartstrings so don’t be surprised that I bought the 2016 Special Gift Set which includes a pack of two banana-scented lotions. A gift for whom, you ask? Myself HAHA but I gave the other one to my mom. Just when people thought I only carry a banana in my bag as a snack, I now have a banana-looking lotion for my moisturizing needs without it being sticky. Peeeerf.

Banila Co. Clean It Zero Makeup Remover
For those who wear hard to remove makeup, aka waterpoof mascara, long-lasting lipstick and heavy foundation, this is the makeup remover for you. Rub some of this onto your face and it will dissolve your makeup. Rinse well with lukewarm water to emulsify and ta~da, your face is ready to be cleansed, toned and moisturized. I found that when it comes to micellar water or oil-based remover, it takes a lot to make sure everything is stripped. With the Clean It Zero, I find that one wash with this takes off everything meowza!

Dr. Morita Animal Face Moisturizing Essence Facial Mask – Tiger & Panda
Who needs a panda and tiger Snapchat filter when you’ve got these masks? And who says you can’t look cool while pampering yourself too? This Taiwanese-made face masks make at-home facials more fun and nobody loves trying out different face masks more than me. Best way to use this? After cleansing, apply to face for 10-15 minutes. Follow the instructions on the box: “Remove the mask and gently massage the residual essence on your skin until it is absorbed. Use a moisturizer afterwards for complete protection. Can be used daily for improved skin care results.”

Etude House Mascara Remover
It kills me that this is not available yet in the Philippines hence why I hoarded three bottles while in Taiwan. When I shopped in Etude House back home, I got the tiniest free sample of this and absolutely fell in love with this dual-phase mascara (shake well before use). I poured some onto a cotton pad and it easily took of my mascara without any struggle. This gentle but potent mascara remover is definitely my holy grail when it comes to taking off tough-to-remove mascaras!

Etude House My Beauty Tool Secret Brush 121 Skin
When applying cream products on your face, the last thing you want is a streaky finish. This brush from Etude House is soooo soft and gives you a flawless, airbrushed finish (tip: brush downwards in the direction of the hair on your face instead of in a circular motion). It’s big enough to cover your whole face and small enough to reach under the eyes and in the nooks and crannies of your nose. It comes with two applicators, a brush and a mini sponge, which snap off the handle. The sponge works like a beauty blender if you’re layering foundation and concealer.

Maybelline Lash Sensational Mascara
I’ve been hearing all about this mascara by my beauty friends who love drug store buys. The wand is fanned out on one side and tiny on the other so you can cover even the shortest of lashes. Personally, I find the wand too huge that I’m almost afraid of poking my eye out. However, I do like formula and the tiny part of the wand which doesn’t over-fan out my lower lashes. I love this because it’s waterproof and not a pain in the ass to remove (especially if you use the Etude House Mascara Remover I mentioned above). Something I learned is that it’s also suitable for sensitive eyes and people who wear contact lenses (like me!) so you don’t have to worry about getting a nasty eye infection yay. Since I have long lashes to begin with, I prefer this kind of mascara that volumizes rather than lengthens.

Maybelline Big Eyes Barbie Mascara
I got this mainly because, uhm, it’s Barbie?? This mascara promises the fluffiest volume and gives you doll-like lashes. It has two mascara wands, one for the actual mascara and one with cotton fibers. You first apply a coat of mascara, then a coat of cotton fiber then one more coat of mascara to get the maximum effect!

A’Pieu x Doraemon Air Cushion Blusher (PK01)
Aside from saying that the packaging is super kawaii and nostalgic, this cute cushion blush is handy for people on the go and whose cheeks need some perking up. The application is not sticky at all and dries kind of powdery. When I travel, I prefer cream products over powders to eliminate the use of brushes altogether. Cushion compacts have become super popular in Korea, from foundations to concealers, cushion makeup gives a flawless finish with this ~new technology~ (also, I just find pressing my finger into the soft sponge addicting hehe)

Cherry BonBon Lip & Cheek Tint (03)
I like using this as an everyday lip and cheek tint since it gives off this very natural-flushed look. It’s easy to apply and spread with your fingers. The texture is a melting gel that becomes dry after application. This is something I’d definitely use for school so that my cheeks and lips have color so I don’t come to my 7:30AM class looking like a zombie.

Berrisom My Lip Tint Pack (Virgin Red)
I’ve been seeing this peel-off make up trend a lot online, particularly peel-off lip tints. I’m game to try any new trends and while some people are not crazy about this one, I personally liked this lip tint. This is perfect for when you’re going to go out and have a dinner– you don’t have to worry about any of your lipstick coming off and transferring onto your food, glass and utensils. My tip? Apply this onto your upper lip before your lower lip and only put a thin layer of this because honestly, you don’t want to get this onto your teeth and mouth. Wait for it to completely dry, peel it off, and you’re ready to go.

Solone Alice Flight of Fancy Makeup Box (No. 02)
Aside from my absolute adoration for Alice in Wonderland, I was totally and utterly enamored by these pearlescent eyeshadow shades. This is good when you layer it with other matte eyeshadows because layering all these shimmery colors is not the best-looking thing. It’s quite pigmented so application is quite effortless and a little bit goes a long way. I like using the light shades for the inner corners of my eyes and waterlines for a very sparkly, “awake” look. My makeup palette came with two empty slots for additional eyeshadows or blushes.

Canmake Clear Coat Mascara
For someone who occasionally wears eyeglasses, clear mascara makes sense. This lengthens and makes your lashes pop without worrying of sneezing and getting black gunk all over your eyes and glasses. Also, this is nice alternative if you really want a natural, dewy, watery-eyed look without all the fuss. This can also serve as a top coat for your other mascaras to prevent shedding or bleeding.
